A note from the Chair – “What particular aspect of the library needs funds?”
One of our ongoing “risks” is the building. It was built back in the days when “environmentally friendly” was not a consideration for materials or structure. So we have softwood frames and single glazing. A lot of it. Our lease with Dorset Council says we can’t make structural alterations so we can’t block up any of the windows to retain heat and reduce our fuel consumption. So the answer to that is to double glaze, and this will be expensive. We will need to price it up, but it could be a lot of money! This will be the priority for a fundraising project, I would suggest. With the cost of energy rising and certain to get higher, if we can reduce our consumption, it will also help our finances. It will mean an outlay of thousands of pounds over the next few years, but it must be worth it in the end.
Plus, we will probably need to replace our gas boiler (because the way forward is to get rid of fossil fuel heating systems) and install some heaters, but this is something that needs more investigation and discussion with Dorset Council. We need to find out what is possible.
We will also be planting some pollution-absorbing plants in the garden. I am also going to suggest to the library gardeners that our pile of branches and twigs could be tidied up and made into a “bee/bug hotel”, similar to those that you see at Garden Centres, but more natural. It will add to the wildlife garden atmosphere.
Also gardening help needed:
If cleaning isn’t your cup of tea, but you enjoy gardening, perhaps you would like to join the Volunteer Gardeners’ group? Now that the Barbara Gooch Memorial garden (Barbara’s Garden) is finished, (and doesn’t it look fantastic?) we need to maintain it and to carry on doing the things that the gardeners have always done on the land surrounding the library. We have traditionally met on the first Saturday of the Month, but it is likely that we need to be doing tasks more frequently now that we have the new garden to look after. We will be setting up a rota. Please let me know if you would be interested in joining this group. Susan Cowsill (Email Susan)
Please remember that we do offer a service of selecting and delivering books to your home. Please contact the library on 01202 886676 during opening hours to enquire about this service.
Stay safe, everyone! Susan Cowsill, Chair of Colehill Library Trustees
