Red Heatwave Warning

June 2026

⚠️ Extreme Heat Warning – Advice for Colehill Residents

The Met Office has issued a Red Warning for Extreme Heat covering Colehill for Weds 24th & Thurs 25th June. Temperatures are expected to reach exceptionally high levels and may remain very warm overnight.

Protect Yourself

✅ Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

✅ Stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm).

✅ Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

✅ Use sunscreen and seek shade whenever possible.

✅ Avoid strenuous activities such as gardening, DIY, running or heavy exercise during the afternoon.

Keep Your Home Cool

✅ Close curtains, blinds and windows exposed to direct sunlight during the day.

✅ Open windows overnight and early in the morning when temperatures are lower.

✅ Switch off unnecessary electrical equipment that generates heat.

Look After Others

Please check on:

  • Older neighbours and relatives.
  • People living alone.
  • Young children and babies.
  • Those with long-term health conditions.

A simple phone call or visit could make a significant difference. Heat can cause serious illness very quickly.

Recognise Heat Illness

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Nausea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Extreme thirst

Seek urgent medical assistance if someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, has a seizure, or shows signs of heatstroke. Call 999 in an emergency.

🐕 Advice for Pet Owners

Pets can suffer life-threatening heatstroke.

Dogs

✅ Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening only.

✅ Carry water for your dog.

✅ Provide constant access to shade and fresh drinking water.

❌ Never leave a dog in a car, conservatory or enclosed space, even for a few minutes.

Cats, Rabbits and Other Pets

✅ Ensure access to cool, shaded areas.

✅ Provide plenty of fresh water.

✅ Move hutches and cages out of direct sunlight.

✅ Check pets frequently for signs of overheating.

Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, restlessness, lethargy and loss of coordination. Contact a vet immediately if concerned.

🌳 Enjoying Outdoor Spaces

  • Take water with you.
  • Use shaded areas where possible.
  • Supervise children closely around water.
  • Take extra care around rivers, lakes and open water, as heatwaves can increase water-related incidents.
