⚠️ Extreme Heat Warning – Advice for Colehill Residents
The Met Office has issued a Red Warning for Extreme Heat covering Colehill for Weds 24th & Thurs 25th June. Temperatures are expected to reach exceptionally high levels and may remain very warm overnight.
Protect Yourself
✅ Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
✅ Stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm).
✅ Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
✅ Use sunscreen and seek shade whenever possible.
✅ Avoid strenuous activities such as gardening, DIY, running or heavy exercise during the afternoon.
Keep Your Home Cool
✅ Close curtains, blinds and windows exposed to direct sunlight during the day.
✅ Open windows overnight and early in the morning when temperatures are lower.
✅ Switch off unnecessary electrical equipment that generates heat.
Look After Others
Please check on:
- Older neighbours and relatives.
- People living alone.
- Young children and babies.
- Those with long-term health conditions.
A simple phone call or visit could make a significant difference. Heat can cause serious illness very quickly.
Recognise Heat Illness
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Excessive sweating
- Nausea
- Muscle cramps
- Extreme thirst
Seek urgent medical assistance if someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, has a seizure, or shows signs of heatstroke. Call 999 in an emergency.
🐕 Advice for Pet Owners
Pets can suffer life-threatening heatstroke.
Dogs
✅ Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening only.
✅ Carry water for your dog.
✅ Provide constant access to shade and fresh drinking water.
❌ Never leave a dog in a car, conservatory or enclosed space, even for a few minutes.
Cats, Rabbits and Other Pets
✅ Ensure access to cool, shaded areas.
✅ Provide plenty of fresh water.
✅ Move hutches and cages out of direct sunlight.
✅ Check pets frequently for signs of overheating.
Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, restlessness, lethargy and loss of coordination. Contact a vet immediately if concerned.

- Take water with you.
- Use shaded areas where possible.
- Supervise children closely around water.
- Take extra care around rivers, lakes and open water, as heatwaves can increase water-related incidents.
